I have been told that this is Hattie Virginia (Jones) Satterwhite, the mother of James Andrew Satterwhite and that she is full-blood Cherokee. Since there is a conflict as to the real name of my great grandmother, I have opted to simply call her Mrs. John Wesley Satterwhite.
My research indicates that my grandfather's mother was Martha J. I don't know what her maiden name was or if she is full-blood Cherokee. I do know that my brother and I each had our DNA tested. There was not even a trace of Native American blood in either of us. I really believe the story that my great grandmother was Native American is not factual.
James Andrew's mother died when he was only two years old, and if I am correct as to who his mother is, then she would have been 19 or 20 years of age when she died. Does this lady look to be so young? It is hard to say from a picture and especially from that era. The women worked so very hard!
I really do hope that this is indeed my great grandmother, and I want to have my Satterwhite history as accurate as I can make it. If anyone has any documentation on the identity of James Andrew Satterwhite's mother, please email me.
